Week 3: Relax, Ex-Lax

Session 3 was a breeze. I had it down pat, Reflection Notebook in hand, working with actual paper, because electronics do not vibe in that room. There's a window during the chilling of the hands and feet where I genuinely can't do much of anything, and that's the only part where the paper doesn't help. Everywhere else, it did. I drove myself there, I drove myself back, and I got a lot done.

I’m really liking this Reflection Notebook, it has serious potential, I can get really creative in what I put in there. Oh and I made a reflection notebook for our teenager. We're trying to build a habit of reflecting on the day or week together. Daily sheets on electronic use, healthy habits, how we helped others, etc. It's not an 8 part survey or anything, but it's something we can actually talk about, and I model it by filling out my own alongside theirs. We'll see if it sticks. I'm cautiously optimistic.

As with every session before this one, no symptoms, so I did my typical thing and lived my life. We went on vacation to upstate New York, and on the drive up I ate gas station sandwiches, then the resort's version of "barbecue" (read: fried everything), then whatever else struck my fancy along the way, because clearly I'd decided I was invincible. And that's about where my luck ran out.

I'll spare you the details. What I will tell you is that my husband is a saint, the Glens Falls ER staff were genuinely awesome, and Ex-Lax does not, in fact, mean relax, no matter what my childhood self believed every time she told her friends to "relax, Ex-Lax." That little adventure postponed my next session (dammit) and added a fresh round of tests and needles to my life. I am so over it. I’m a tad concerned, if I'm not invincible, what else is waiting in the wings?

Then folks tell me I’m a fighter, I’m fighting, etc.. and really, that’s not true at all. It's actually the opposite. I'm not fighting anything. I'm compliant. I show up and do exactly what I'm told, even though I hate every bit of it. No resistance, no battle stance, just... doing what I gotta do. Maybe I start using the compliance to my advantage instead. I’ll add it to my reflection notebook for next week!

Plenty to work with. We'll see how it goes. See you next week.
